What the three products expose
Runpod documents endpoint workers that scale with requests. Modal lets applications request GPU resources for functions. Vast.ai’s documentation includes a serverless product alongside instance rentals. These interfaces put different amounts of orchestration into your application code.
This is a focused starting shortlist, not a survey of every serverless provider. Check runtime support and account limits before spending time optimizing an incompatible deployment.
| Platform | Integration question | Trial to run |
|---|---|---|
| Runpod | Can the model fit the worker handler? | Deploy the production image and replay jobs |
| Modal | Does the function model fit the application? | Measure startup and concurrent calls |
| Vast.ai | How will endpoints and workers be configured? | Test queue recovery and capacity changes |

Choose a traffic trace before choosing a provider
Keep a representative arrival pattern, including quiet periods and bursts. Use the same model artifact and output settings on each product. A constant load generator may hide the cold starts that dominate an intermittently used application.
Measure the time from client request to valid response, including time spent in a queue. Record the warm-worker policy because keeping capacity ready changes both the bill and the result.
The integration bill is real
Count the engineering work to build an image, manage secrets, publish a new model version and recover failed jobs. A team already using a compatible Python workflow may prefer a different product from a team shipping a container through an existing pipeline.
Check whether results must stream, whether jobs can run asynchronously and how clients learn that a job failed. Treat retries as a normal execution path and give every job a stable identifier.
A sensible selection rule
Choose the service that meets the latency objective under realistic bursts and exposes enough control to explain its costs. If no configuration does both, keep a small dedicated baseline or move long jobs to an asynchronous queue.
Do a second test after a deployment update. Startup and cache behavior can change when the model or image changes, even when the traffic trace stays the same.
Questions readers ask
Is serverless always cheaper for low traffic?
It can reduce idle spending, but startup work, minimum billing behavior and warm-worker settings affect the actual bill.
What is the first benchmark to run?
Replay realistic gaps and bursts, measuring full request latency and billed worker time.
