H100 vs A100: compare cost per completed workload

Choose an H100 when a matched test shows that its performance or supported execution path justifies the rental premium. An A100 can remain economical when it has enough memory and meets the deadline. Compare exact variants and total completed work, not a generation label or peak specification.

Confirm the exact accelerator

NVIDIA documents H100 under Hopper and A100 under Ampere, with different product variants and memory configurations. A quote that only says A100 is incomplete for a workload near its memory limit. Record memory capacity and the system configuration before comparing rates.

The accelerator’s theoretical capabilities do not specify how your model, precision and kernels will perform. Match the software stack and validate output quality in the trial.

QuestionWhy it changes the choice
Which memory variant?Determines whether the workload fits
Which host and interconnect?Affects input and multi-GPU communication
Which precision?Changes memory, speed and potentially quality
Which deadline?Makes elapsed time a separate objective from cost

Calculate the break-even speedup

If an illustrative H100 offer costs 1.8 times as much per hour as a matched A100 offer, it needs more than 1.8 times the useful throughput to reduce compute cost per result. It can still be worth buying for a deadline below that speedup.

Include setup and data loading in a short job. A faster training loop does not save the same percentage on a session that spends much of its paid time preparing data. These ratios are examples, not live quotes or measured GPU results.

For inference, test concurrency and context

Load the same model revision and prompt set. Increase concurrency until the latency objective is reached, then compare the successful request rate at that boundary. A maximum-throughput run with excessive latency answers a different question.

Check memory at long context lengths. If one configuration forces a different quantization scheme or lower context limit, report that change instead of presenting the numbers as equivalent.

For training, include the whole iteration

Measure steps, checkpoint saves and evaluation. If the job uses several GPUs, measure the actual topology you intend to rent. A single-device advantage may not translate into the same cluster advantage.

Pick the lower-cost configuration that meets memory, quality and time constraints. Save the test recipe so a new quote can be evaluated without repeating the entire investigation.

Questions readers ask

Is H100 always cheaper per token?

No. Rental premium, model configuration, utilization and achieved throughput determine the cost per useful token.

Can I compare any A100 against any H100?

Only if you disclose the variants and match the workload conditions. Memory and system differences can materially affect the result.
