Make a GPU workload portable between providers

A portable GPU workload has a versioned runtime, explicit hardware requirements, external durable state and a repeatable launch test. Containers help package software, but networking, drivers, storage and provider-specific APIs still need to be checked when the workload moves.

Write down the assumptions your laptop hides

List the CUDA and framework versions, required GPU memory, CPU memory, shared memory, disk capacity and network ports. Add any host-level features or elevated permissions. These details decide whether a container can run on a particular service.

Runpod documents Pod limitations such as unsupported UDP connections and Docker Compose. A containerized application that relies on those features needs adaptation before it can move there. Portability starts with the required behavior, not the image file.

Separate configuration from credentials

Build an image with a pinned dependency set and store configuration separately. Inject scoped credentials at launch. Avoid baking storage keys into the image or copying a developer’s entire home directory into the container.

Use a small manifest for model revision, input location, output location and run identifier. Keep provider-specific launch settings outside the training code so changing an allocation does not require editing the model loop.

Move state deliberately

An external checkpoint is only portable if the new worker can read it, has enough local space to restore it and uses compatible software. Test the transfer path before an urgent migration.

Use explicit output names and a completion marker. A consumer should be able to distinguish a complete result from a partial upload. Record the manifest next to the result so another operator can tell exactly what ran.

Maintain a ten-minute acceptance job

Create a small job that loads the model, reads sample inputs, runs a few steps or requests, saves an artifact and reloads it. Include one failure-and-resume check. Keep this job fast enough that the team runs it before every provider change.

Compare the resulting metrics and outputs with a known acceptable range. Investigate material differences before moving the full workload. Being able to launch on two providers is useful; being able to recover and validate the result on either one is the stronger operational test.

Questions readers ask

Does Docker guarantee GPU portability?

No. The host driver, device access, storage and networking must still satisfy the workload requirements.

What should move with the output?

The model and dataset identifiers, runtime version, configuration, run identifier and validation results.
