What the VM keeps simple
A VM gives the team one environment to configure and inspect. That can be enough for a notebook, a training worker or a small service. Automate setup and keep state external so the convenience does not turn into an irreplaceable machine.
The cost of simplicity appears when several teams need fair scheduling, consistent releases and coordinated recovery. Manual allocation becomes harder to reason about as the number of users and jobs grows.
What a GPU cluster introduces
NVIDIA’s GPU Operator automates parts of the Kubernetes GPU software stack, including drivers and supporting components. It does not decide your organization’s scheduling policy, data ownership or response to a bad model release.
Before adopting a cluster, identify an owner for upgrades, node capacity, observability and application deployment. An unowned platform can create more interruptions than the VM workflow it replaces.
| Need | VM starting point | Kubernetes starting point |
|---|---|---|
| A short experiment | Small setup surface | Useful if a cluster already exists |
| Many repeatable services | Requires more custom coordination | Shared deployment and scheduling model |
| Multiple teams | Explicit account and machine ownership | Explicit quotas and access policy |
| Recovery | Recreate the machine and restore state | Replace workload and restore state |

Compare operating cost, not just machine cost
Estimate time spent building and maintaining the deployment workflow. A managed control plane can reduce some tasks while leaving image compatibility, GPU scheduling and storage decisions with the team.
Run a release and rollback drill on the proposed system. If the team cannot explain how to recover a failed rollout, the platform is not ready to carry an important workload.
Keep the workload movable either way
Use a versioned container, explicit device requirements and external durable state. Put provider-specific launch configuration beside the application rather than scattering it through the model code.
Start with the simplest environment that meets today’s operational requirements. Move to shared scheduling when the repeated coordination work is large enough to justify owning that system.
Questions readers ask
Do GPUs require Kubernetes?
No. GPU workloads can run on individual virtual machines and other managed runtime products.
Does the GPU Operator manage my model?
It manages supporting infrastructure components. Your team still owns application configuration, data and model behavior.
