The first decision is how you want to rent
Runpod’s Pod documentation describes customizable environments and Secure and Community Cloud options. Vast.ai describes on-demand, reserved and interruptible instance types, with offer-specific conditions such as maximum duration. Pick the product type before comparing prices.
A marketplace offer is a particular allocation, not a promise that every other offer on the same platform has identical behavior. Save the chosen offer details with your test results.
| Decision | Runpod trial | Vast.ai trial |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | Build and launch the intended Pod image | Launch the intended rental template |
| Storage | Check what survives stop and termination | Check storage and expiry behavior |
| Availability | Verify the selected cloud and region | Verify host and maximum rental duration |
| Cost | Time the complete job | Include the selected rental type |

Compare equivalent work
Use the same GPU model and memory variant where possible. Match GPU count, model precision and dataset. Record host CPU and memory because a slow data loader can make the GPU appear underpowered.
Download the model before measuring steady-state inference, but include download time in the full project cost. That gives two useful numbers: serving performance and the money required to get there.
Make interruption a purchasing choice
If the job is recoverable, test a cheaper interruptible option separately from the ordinary rental. Measure how much work is lost and whether the checkpoint can move to another worker. Do not mix an interruptible quote with an uninterrupted quote and call the difference a platform discount.
For a deadline, use a rental whose duration and replacement process cover the full window. A low price is unhelpful if the job cannot finish before the offer expires.
Our decision rule
Choose the offer that passes the deployment and restore tests at a lower total project cost. When the prices are close, prefer the workflow your team can debug and reproduce quickly.
Keep a second tested configuration available in your deployment notes. Inventory changes, so the winning offer in this trial may not be available next week.
Questions readers ask
Is Vast.ai always cheaper than Runpod?
No universal price result is established. Offers, rental types and complete job costs need to be matched.
Can I move the same container between them?
Often the application can be adapted, but confirm runtime, port, storage and permission requirements with a launch test.
